MURDOCH UNIVERSITY

RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION

RELOCATION OF NEW EMPLOYEES

POLICY

The University will reimburse travel expenses and make a contribution towards removal expenses to new academic staff appointees (and in certain cases, general staff) recruited from overseas, interstate and intrastate, providing their contract of employment allows for such payment.   Relocation allowances are not normally made to appointees with contracts less than 24 months or externally funded research appointments.

This policy aims to assist new staff members to transfer their immediate family and personal effects to a place of residence within the metropolitan region, minimise family disturbance and ensure a smooth transition of the new member of staff to the University.

STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES

The Administrative Head may approve payment of removal expenses on production of receipts by the new staff member. The University has appointed Grace Removals Group as the University's preferred supplier of removal services.  Where a new staff member chooses not to use Grace Removals Group, three quotes must be obtained by the staff member prior to acceptance by the University of the engagement of another removalist. The Administrative Head may reimburse the appointee part or all of the cost of removal of household or personal effects inclusive of insurance costs, based on the following cubic metre allowances:

Appointee

15m3

Appointee + 1 dependant

25m3

Appointee + 2 dependants

30m3

Appointee + 3 or more dependants

35m3

Should the period of employment be less than 24 months, the Administrative Head has the authority to approve/not approve the appropriate reimbursement and may exercise discretion on the determination of a contribution towards relocation expenses.

Reimbursement of expenses for appointments less than 24 months is subject to the availability and funds from the relevant cost centre budget.

Where the staff member resigns at any time up to two years from the date of the appointment and the University has paid any relocation expenses to the staff member, the University, as a condition of release may require the repayment of the whole of the relocation expenses or any such part thereof as it may decide.
