The term relative includes parent and child, husband and wife, brother and sister and includes de-facto relationships.
Where members of the University’s staff are the following management principles must be applied.
Selection/Appointment decisions:
A member of staff should not take any direct part in the selection process for any appointment for which a relative is a candidate. This includes recommendations or approval for casual, fixed term or ongoing employment. Any recommendation that a relative of a staff member should be offered an appointment should be advised to the Director Human Resources.
Work Arrangements:
The University is particularly concerned that relatives should not be employed in areas where the related staff member has control or influence, as a consequence of which the objective evaluation of performance and discipline may be hindered.
Any proposal to appoint a relative in these circumstances requires the Director Human Resources’ approval. In any case which is approved the normal expectation is that the relative will not be under the direct supervision or influence of the related staff member.
By extension of the above principles of professional ethics, staff members should not be involved in the supervision or evaluation of students who are relatives or with whom they are engaged in even temporary defacto or emotional relationships. Failure to observe this could result in disciplinary proceedings.
