Paid outside work should not detract from general staff members' performance in undertaking their University commitments and should not be undertaken during the employee's normal working hours.
Murdoch University recognises that members of general staff have a right to engage in income producing activity outside of the normal working day.
It is important that the University be protected from any legal implications that may arise as a result of general staff undertaking other paid work. Issues such as workers compensation liability are one example where difficulties may arise.
Staff are required to fulfil their contractual obligations to Murdoch University in terms of productivity and hours of work. Paid outside work beyond this responsibility may only be undertaken where it does not have a detrimental impact on work performance.
Outside work must only be undertaken where there is no conflict of interest with the staff member's duties or role at Murdoch University.
General staff members should advise their Administrative Head when they engage in outside work. Staff members must be able to provide assurances that there will be no impact on their normal day to day duties.
No University resources should be used when general staff commit to undertaking outside paid work.
The University understands that staff who have part time contracts may be obliged to seek further paid work elsewhere.
Failure to comply with this policy and standards may result in disciplinary action.
