- Academic Staff
- Staff members employed under an Academic staff employment contract.

- Leave for the care of a newly adopted child.

- A program designed to increase the participation rates of targeted groups.

- Annual Leave
- Paid leave for rest or recreation .

- Appeals Committee-Academic Staff Promotions
- Reviews the process undertaken by the Promotions Committee in cases where an
unsuccessful applicant makes an appeal against the outcome.

- Associated Leases
- Lease rental arrangement where an associate eg partner, spouse of the employee owns a
vehicle and leases it to the University. The vehicle is then provided to the employee on a
fully maintained basis.

- Casual Employment
- General staff members employed for a period of less than one (1) month, or less
than fifteen (15) hours per week. Casual employees are also available through an
outside employment agency for brief periods of time.

- Classification
- The level and related salary of positions for general staff.

- Consultant/Contractor
- A person external to the University who provides professional advice and /or service to
the University.

- Continuous Employment
- Employment of staff on a permanent basis.

- Cultural diversity
- Acceptance and promotion of differing cultures on the University campus.

- Discipline Procedure
- The mechanism and process for managing instances of identified sub standard work
performance or behaviour, which fails to meet University requirements.

- Discrimination
- Treatment of staff members and students differing on the basis of gender, age,race,
religion or characteristics as defined in legislation.

- Dispute Settlement Procedure
- A formal procedure for managing disputes between employees as defined by the relevant
agreement.

- Employment Contract
- A contract between the University and a staff member identifying the conditions of
employment.

- Enterprise Bargaining
- The process of formal negotiation between employer and union representatives that
results in a certified agreement.

- Equal Opportunity
- A program that helps ensure the University maintains an environment where all people are
treated fair and equally.

- Equity Committee
- A committee committed to ensuring the University complies with and is conscious of equal
employment opportunity legislation.

- Fixed term employment
- Employment for a fixed period of time in accordance with relevant awards.

- General Staff
- Staff members employed on a general staff employment contract.

- Graduates
- Students who have successfully completed their university studies and have met all the
University requirements.

- Grievance Officers
- Staff members, nominated by the campus community and responsible for interviewing and
seeking a resolution to satisfy all parties when a formal grievance has been raised.

- Grievance Procedure
- A formal procedure developed for resolving complaints of harassment or discrimination.

- Harassment
- Unwelcome or offensive behaviour by one person to another.

- Honorary Appointments
- Where the University appoints a person in an honorary capacity, eg Visiting Fellow.

- Honorary Fellow
- Distinguished scholars who normally reside in Western Australia with whom the University
associates its work.

- Leave Without Pay
- Forfeiture of salary by an employee for a period of absence usually not exceeding twelve
(12) months.

- Long Service Leave
- Extended leave based on years of service as defined in the relevant Enterprise
Bargaining Agreement.

- Market Loading
- Percentage of salary above the relevant agreement, in accordance with the present
economic climate.

- Murdoch University (Academic Staff) Enterprise Agreement
- An agreement between the University and the relevant union representing academic staff.

- Murdoch University (General Staff) Enterprise Bargaining Agreement
- An agreement between the University and the relevant unions representing general staff.

- Novated Lease
- A standard financing leasing arrangement where the staff member enters into an agreement
with a Financier. A Deed of Novation sub-leases the vehicle to the University which
provides the vehicle fully maintained to the staff member.

- Operating Lease
- The motor vehicle is leased to the University by a Fleet Manager and provided fully
maintained to the staff member.

- Parental Leave
- Leave available for staff members for the care of a young child following birth or
adoption.

- Professorial Promotions Committee
- Professorial Promotions Committee for academic staff promotion and probationary review,
levels D and E.

- Promotions Committee
- University Academic Staff Promotions and Probationary Review Committee for academic
staff levels A - C.
- .
- Relocation
- The moving of a new staff member and family from overseas, interstate or intrastate.

- Remuneration
- All benefits including salary, superannuation, motor vehicles etc. provided to the staff
member.

- Salary Packaging
- The process of combining salary and benefits instead of salary only to form the total
remuneration.

- Salary Sacrifice
- The part of the remuneration package set aside to cover benefits and related costs

- Senior Grievance Officer
- A grievance officer, appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, responsible for resolving
grievances via investigation and conciliation.

- Selection Committee
- A committee for the selection of a new staff member following a recruitment process.

- Sick Leave
- Leave with pay available to staff for personal illness in accordance with the relevant
agreement.

- Study Leave
- Leave, approved by the University, which is available for staff members undertaking
study.

- Superannuation
- Superannuation for staff members through approved superannuation funds in accordance
with legislative obligations and agreements.

- Superannuation Scheme for Australian Universities (SSAU)
- A Superannuation scheme for staff subject to eligibility requirements.

- TEC
- Total Employment Cost.

- Tertiary Education Superannuation Scheme (TESS)
- A scheme established for University staff to provide minimum superannuation in
accordance with government legislation.

- Visiting Fellow
- A visitor to the University of at least Lecturer status, who is paid or not, whose visit
to the University or activity associated with the University is for a minimum of four (4)
weeks.
