Whilst we all hope that our time at Murdoch University will be a happy and rewarding experience we must recognise the potential for things to go wrong. When something happens to cause us concern, detriment or even harm we may wish to use the processes and procedures available to remedy the situation. Below is a list of topics for grievance, complaints and appeals that are available for staff to use. At the end of the page you will find further information regarding external bodies to whom you may refer matters.
NB: This page will develop over time to provide useful guidance for you. At this point in time we felt that it would be useful to place in one location references to the different processes and procedures that are available to you.
If you wish to provide feedback on the usefulness of this page, please let us know via email or telephone (+61 8 9360 2430).

Should you find that the above procedures and processes do not satisfy your concern you may be able to access external agencies who may be able to assist in the resolution of the matter.
Where your concern involves a dispute over your terms and conditions of employment you should seek advice - possibly including third party independent advice - prior to accessing any external agency (including industrial relations commissions/magistrates courts, etc.).
Where your concern relates to discrimination or harassment you may be able to access the services of the Equal Opportunity Commission (WA) or the Australian Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission. It will depend on the nature of the discrimination or harassment as to whether the Equal Opportunity Commission (WA) or the Australian Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission can assist - you should seek advice from them to ascertain how to proceed.
In cases where health and safety are at issue and the University's processes have not led to a resolution you may be able to access WorkSafe (WA). Prior to approaching WorkSafe (WA) you must have attempted to resolve the issue using the Resolution of Issues Process.
Where you have concerns about your workers compensation claim you can seek advice from Occupational Safety and Health at Murdoch University or where they are not able to assist from WorkCover (WA).
In addition to the above the Ombudsman (Western Australia) can assist staff with issues related to administrative decision making, practices and conduct.
Before complaining to the Ombudsman about a decision made by Murdoch University regarding your grievance or appeal, you should first try to resolve your problem through the avenues provided by this website. If you have not followed the steps laid out in the relevant university procedures, the Ombudsman may ask you to do so before accepting your complaint.
If you are not satisfied with the outcome of the university's complaint handling process, or if you believe that the university has not responded to your complaint in a reasonable time, you can complain to the Ombudsman. You should put your complaint in writing and enclose copies of relevant documents. The Ombudsman will seek to determine whether you have been treated reasonably by the university and may recommend remedial action, if that is appropriate.
It is important to note that the Ombudsman is impartial and does not act on behalf of staff or the University and considers only whether the University has followed its own regulations and procedures and to considerations of procedural fairness. For further information contact the Ombudsman Western Australia.
